The Challenge
The terrace had issues with standing water and, being in a coastal location, was exposed to harsh marine conditions and weathering. The challenge was to create a solution that not only provided robust waterproofing but also offered an aesthetically pleasing finish to suit the unique style of the development. The intricate design needed to maintain precision, particularly with the tile effect application across raised deck areas, which required exceptional attention to detail.
The Solution
Roofsmiths LLP, specialists in high-quality installations, specified WestWood’s PMMA liquid waterproofing solution for its durability and UV stability, ideal for the marine environment of San Remo Towers. The tile effect finish was created using 6mm tape, applied by hand, to form precise grout lines over the terrace, including the challenging raised areas. This process was managed by a skilled operative, ensuring the diagonal design remained straight even as it continued over the 180-meter perimeter. The WestWood system not only resolved the standing water issues but also enhanced the thermal performance of the building, providing a robust, trafficable surface for residents. Weekly site visits by WestWood’s regional field technicians offered continuous support and ensured the project maintained the highest quality standards throughout.
The Outcome
The roof terrace at San Remo Towers now offers effective drainage with no standing water, improved thermal insulation, and exceptional waterproofing with a 20-year guarantee. The intricate tile effect design was completed with precision, transforming the terrace into a functional and visually appealing space for residents. The project won ‘Project of the Year’ at the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) in 2021, showcasing the successful collaboration between Roofsmiths LLP and WestWood in delivering a high-quality, long-lasting solution.
